I said ubuntu MAINLY attracts people that dont want to learn anything. I did leave room for the few that do care about learning. I did not say ALL ubuntu users do not want to learn anything. Even though hes annoying and lazy, Bradj47 learns new stuff all the time on irc.sindustries.org in #opendesktop :P

hi dear farizluqman,

I personally prefer the Radience-theme of Ubuntu 10.04. Ambience is even not so much my case. But this grey color of the Mac-look is even not as nice as other themes are.
Have you ever testes SlicknesS blue for example or even the Ubuntu Sun-theme wich you can find here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Lucid/UbuntuSun

Then you can find so many other nice Metacity-themes her: http://softpedia.de

Go to the section "Linux" and there you go to the subsection "desktop-environment". There you will find the section called "Themes".
There I found so many nice themes to use forGnome-Desktop, so that there is no necessity to use Ambience or even Radience, if you do no like them.

And if you want, I can send you many nice Wallpapers from my friend bignono. He publishes so much nice artwork here...boaaahh....you should look on them. He's really talented although he is a newcomer. I have so much respect on him and thins founded a real deep friendship between us.

So guys, don't be so disgusting on us ubuntu-users. And me I am also going on with constructiong my iconthemes, which I have in development. But this will take some more time, until these will be finished up as far as I can see.

Greetings
Karmicbastler

Yeah, it's not brown anymore. I would have to admit it looks good with the new purple and all, but I don't want to stare at a purple theme all day. So I kept the grey of the toolbars and changed my background and icon set to an orange one. I think it looks really good: http://resuni.byethost6.com/forum/download/file.php?id=147&sid=206c6108a707a6c9c2dffaa11bdb23b5

huhummm. thanks to ubuntu i know A lot of software i've never heard about. also ubuntu has great japanese learning tools...
it's not just showing off with the themes, it's the complete picture, the user-friendlyness etc.
i install ubuntu on pc's of handicapped people so the can browse the web without getting e-mails from their provider that their pc is sending spam! handicapped people don't know about all this virus shit and don't want to know! they just want to browse the net. with ubuntu i provide a stable and secure system to them.
so again, it is not about showing off a shining theme! it's the complete picture of ubuntu that makes it perfect!
and the perfect picture just needs a theme!!

people often ask me why my pc has all those effects and why i change them every month.
my answer: BECAUSE I CAN!!! in windows you don't have the freedom to show off with a shiny theme because it's blocked!
if you want to change your theme in windows you have to use one of the many hack-tools to unlock it!!

Don't know how you can say that with a straight face. Look, even though it has gotten much more simpler compared to even 6.04, for example, there are still many things that require the terminal.

However, you cannot expect everyone to magically know how to use Linux just like that. There are other distros out there that have tried to make the transition easier for new users moving to Linux. Canonical just so happen to have gotten it right with Ubuntu.

On another note, I thought the whole point of a PC was to make life easier, anyway? Sigh...

hy guys,
I forgot to tell you, if you have god ideas for new iconthemes or even new Metacity-themes then you can publish them here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Lucid/UbuntuSun

Read about how you can contribute for more nice artwork for Ubuntu. Ideas are always welcomed.

This is one more reason for not dumping down Ubuntu like this.

These group is called Windows-Haters and not Ubuntu-Haters!!! So keep to the topic guys. If you are not willing to, the please leave this group. There are other groups here, that deal with the topic of Ubuntu

Putting all this work into one distribution is just nonsense. Why not create unbranded themes and icons that can be used by any distribution of GNU/Linux or *BSD?

Personally, I hate seeing wallpapers, icon themes, kdm/gdm/slim themes branded with stupid logos for distributions of Linux, it makes them completely useless for people that DONT use ubuntu. And just because you ubuntu users may outnumber us on opendesktop, doesnt mean its worldwide. Since registering on opendesktop in 2007, I have created exactly ONE branded wallpaper and that was done on request from a friend, and I immediately put up an unbranded copy for the rest of the world to use.

Also, true, this isnt an ubuntu haters group, but that doesnt mean everyone here has to like all the ubuntu fanboism going on here. I find it disgusting. Its not gods gift. Its no more polished than a normal debian install. Its no more innovative than debian is either. I would love for someone to point out what you can do on ubuntu that cant be done on debian? What other than the nvidia driver installer does ubuntu have that debian doesnt?

hi Dear,
if you don't like the brands, then just rework the iconthemes hiw you wish them to be. Nobody forbids you that. The GPl-Licence allows downloading, using and reworkng every artwork corresponding to your very own taste.

Then I must say, that nvidia-drivers are so bad. They make your graphic-card become too hot, melting and destroing your computer. Why?? Because the very new driver of nvidia has a defect, that switches off the regular cooling of your graphic-card. Nvidia already confirmed that and had to take down this driver from its servers. The warnings are on since February of this year. But this doesn't affect me, because I personally have Intel-Achritecture on my machine and the Intel-drivers are more secure in my opinion. There you don't have this problem.

OK, Ubuntu and Debian are nearly the same. But Ubuntu is in so far better than Debian, because of its better hardware-support referring to WLAN-cards, TV-cards and printers and even scanners. But the desktop itself is the same everywhere in the distros.
But if I compare for example OpenSuse with Ubuntu, then I find out very early that OpenSuse does not support new modern hardware. I had this problem with my WLAN-Stick from MSI. In OpenSuse it didn't work at all. Then I tried Ubuntu and it worked from the first minute on without any disturbancies.
So Ubuntu has many advantages against other distros.
This means for me, that the other distros have to be developed on in this point. The new drivers should be handed on from Ubuntu to OpenSuse. Because I am of the opinion, that all users have the same right to get their new hardware running in all Linux-distros and not only in a few.

And what I also like in Ubuntu is, that I can have OpenSuse-desing in Ubuntu without having the need to install OpenSuse. Why?? because all the artwork from OpenSuse (Metacity-themes as well as the icons have been successfully ported to Ubuntu and also the Wallpapers work also in Ubuntu (I have them here on my machine!).

And then the next thing is, that Ubuntu is much easier to understand than Debian, if you are willing to learn a few things about using the terminal.
Ohter distros are more complicated and difficult than Ubuntu.
And my very next advantage of Ubuntu in comparison to Windows7 is, that Ubuntu is faster, easier to learn and that Ubuntu does not make any regulations on the users as Microsoft does!!!!

That's why it is worthy to switch away from Microsoft and other systems back to Ubuntu.

Greetings
Karmicbastler

Those drivers are readily available for debian as well. Just because ubuntu thinks its a good thing to become bloatware so every piece of junk usb gadget or modem works out of the box, doesnt mean that it is a good thing. And, exactly how many distributions of linux have you tried? Ive seen you mention TWO. Ive distrohopped across atleast 250. Not including the 3 major BSDs ;)

Also, try running debian testing, this is where all the support for new hardware comes from...not debian stable. Debian stable does not introduce support for new hardware. AFAIK, ubuntu releases dont introduce new hardware support before the next release either :)

The first thing that came to my mind when reading this post wasn't all the work going into one distro but this is kind of a spam post as well. Why advertise of a place to put your metacity artwork ON another metacity artwork site?

hi farizluqman and the others,

if you are talking about me as being a Troll, the you are so wrong.

I didn't want to force anyone doing anything. It was only a suggestion, if you don't like the default look of Ubuntu.

Sorry if you thought, I wanted to force somebody to anything.

But for saying it: I am not a Troll!!!!

TheRob is a troll. He's pretending to know something we don't and trolling about it. Why don't you share your knowledge, TheRob, instead of trolling about how we're all 14-year-old idiots who think Linux is a kernel. Or you could simply admit you're trolling because you like to be an asshole.

As far as I know, Linux is a kernel created by Linus Torvalds based off of the proprietary Unix kernel.

So tell me where I'm wrong. Educate me. Or you could continue to call me a 14-year-old idiot Ubuntu user and I will simply conclude that whatever OS you're using is the idiot's choice. Because, really, only an ignorant idiot would continue to troll.

Not necessarily. The newer ones like Vista and 7 have pretty little wrappers that open huge security threats. As well as make the entire system extremely unstable.

and starting with vista (and 7), there's a HUGE disk space eater. look up "winsxs".
it's a solution to having multiple versions of dll files, so it copies them all there, so it doesn't have the wrong version. vista came with my laptop and i allocated 30 gb for it, the rest for linux. i was wondering why there was only 2 gb left when there was not much on it, and found this winsxs folder was 11.5 gb out of my 30.
the dumbest part is that there's no safe method of pruning it. you can't delete stuff from when you uninstalled an app that uses that version, and there's no tools for getting rid of unnecessary stuff. it only has a tool for removing service pack uninstallers.
dumb idea m$.
