I really don't give a shit whether an operating system is open or closed. As long as it works. While I agree that Apple is becoming more and more like Microsoft by the day, just because software is proprietary doesn't mean it's Tyranny as you say. That's the one thing I hate about most Linux enthusiasts. They don't care whether something works or not. They just want it to be open. So explain to me how proprietary software like MacOS and Solaris aren't free? Especially Solaris, since they base the modifications of their proprietary OS from the ones made to the open source OS. And explain to me how they are anything like Windows.

But, really, my problem is that we have, here on planet earth, big-business companies that are oppressing competition and innovation, and are blocking, to all of us, better alternatives, and forcing us to use inefficient ways to use and share our own media, such as iPhone that not too long ago could be reached only with the software iTunes (via VBox) before LibiMobileDevice was created http://www.libimobiledevice.org/

Thank you for your reply, Bradj47.

Well we can't do much about that. People are going to be stupid and use what everyone else is using. Especially in the case of the iPod, which is really becoming very un-free. You bring up a good point. I've always hated how the iPod requires iTunes. I'm glad the open source community came out with a way around that. But that's why I've always had a Sansa. Instead of requiring some shitty program, it just works as a USB storage device. With the exception of videos, whenever I put a file on it it can read it.

But back to the main point: People are stupid and they're going to buy what they see on TV. That's why I had an idea to create an open source-project to advertise open-source products. It would be a website where users would all create ads for their favorite open-source operating system or other program and other users would vote for what they wanted on TV. The site would need a massive amount of donations of course to pay for advertising costs.

Yeah, if I can get enough people to help me with it I'll totally start the site too. Mostly open-source video editors to help spread the word. But people who have web design experience would be helpful too. I don't really know where to go to recruit though.

i dont hate windows users, i pity them. they dont have the courage to break free from locked code. i just dont understand: why to pay for something if i can get the same product for free from different place? i would consider to pay if the product would be better, much better. the only thing about all this scam i hate is the lack of choice when u buy pc/laptop. why does it come with windows? i didnt ask for it? i would be much happier if the product would cost 100£ less. i feel like i am being robbed. thanks god that is changing now. we dont have to hate windows users, we have to try and explain them, and maybe some 1 will open their eyes. sound like matrix)

Packaging PC's with Windows is part of Microsoft's business scheme. Using the consumers' lack of knowledge is their basis. Most people don't even know what an operating system is. Thanks to Apple, they only know 'Mac and PC'. They buy the 'PC' since it's cheaper and use Windows without even suspecting all the viruses, spyware, and bloat building up underneath. Then in a year or so, they think they need a new computer. Which is the reason Microsoft isn't fixing all the bugs in their latest releases.

A similar thing also happened at the business level. CEO's of companies hired some tech who actually knew what they were doing to run their network. They set up a Unix network of course and the CEO didn't understand it very well and the tech did a bad job of explaining how to work things. The M$ marketers used this as an opportunity to sell Windows to these large companies and the companies bought it, despite what the techs they hired tried to explain to them. Still to this day, techs all over the US and world are stuck using Windows because their boss doesn't know what he's doing.

"It's we dont have to hate windows users, we have to try and explain them, and maybe some 1 will open their eyes. sound like matrix)"

See the comment thread I started on one of the previous pages in this group. It isn't as easy as it sounds.

i did read ur post.well, u tried, and he failed, not u. some people when they come to an obstacle, prefer to pay and get is sorted, other want to understand the problem and try to solve it themselves. this way u save some money and gain knowledge. the knowledge is priceless. but lets admin, humanity need stupid people who are willing to pay for nothing. if every one would be smart, the competition would be very high and would be harder to survive.
another reason people are stuck with Windows, is the fears of adopting/learning to something new. i know people were afraid to move from XP to Vista, so forget about unix). people are used to work with what they learned to use at the beginning. my sister have always been using linux, she have no idea of window (only in school). this is the step needed for next generation in order to direct them to the right path.

Open software have brighter future because communities of advanced users around the world are helping out into the distributions.

* Open source software always wins. because their programmers are mostly a Guru that bought from another planets. (some argue that they're from mars). Ow yeah, that's why I can hack my neighbor's wifi using a very user-friendly Aircrack (windows user should not understand what I'm talking 'bout)

* Closed source are always sucks. Forums about closed source are more than to solve problems. ow yeah; -- and again --- open source rocks.

* Open source - Humans that have an advanced and open minded loves to learn. Without doubt, Linux user (especially Backtrack and Debian) are more advanced and surely they have used Windows once, just to laugh about it's stupidity.

* closed source - proprietary, commonly trusted by it's high price. The higher the price the more professional the software is. yes, I agreed. We can't get anything professional ; with our low-cost education / without want to learn more.

* While in open source, mainly Linux or FreeBSD, people learns how to program for them self, compiles, and get the "PROFESSIONAL" just for free, the cost for getting "PROFESSIONAL SOFTWARE" are just learning how things work.

* I just keep hating. hate about windows. I think I have things I love about Windows.

- Change the ugly themes.
- Play 3D games
- that's all

We are given choices that is sooo many... But I'm advising you that, please don't be such a noobs that depends on communists. We shall learn more, than just what we are using. Or if you just lazy and lethargic to learn, you are just noobs that only depends on the net to solve problems..

It's your choice. don't be so extremist. else your idea will be kicked out of the windows.

* Free = Libre

* This is the Unix philosophy: Write programs that do one thing and do it well. Write programs to work together. Write programs to handle text streams, because that is a universal interface.

* In Windows, Worst is painful. While in Linux, Worst is better. That's why closed-source user are mainly psycho.

I love something that have source. As thousand times I say, open source user loves to learn.. The best moment of Open Source user is when they just did thousand of mess into a beautiful codes and just successfully compiled from source, or just from scratch...

We can really compete proprietary software users with open-source users. open source users have open-minded and very creative. That's why this website exists. Open-source users loves to share and loves to learn to create something new.

Arguing about the ugly windows themes, just try Xoblite. http://xoblite.net/ a Blackbox for windows, they're PERFECT! take a look at their screenshot. http://www.boxshots.org/index.php?action=search&search=xoblite&type=2 . This is for Windows that loves to customize and just to remove the ugly looks of the proprietary software. Go ahead to the web... I love it.. I tried it , I'm very satisfied

This is on of the Xoblite (GUI + themes) for Windows screenshot:
